VW's fun house
Story and Photos by CK Lim - 27 Jan 2010
We check out the Autostadt, an automotive theme park created for automobile fans by Volkswagen.

Car city

Back in 1994, someone in Volkswagen had a brilliant idea of documenting the production stages of Volkswagen vehicles and the company's operations in a theme-park like environment. The board of management was impressed enough to give it the go-ahead, and the Autostadt broke ground in Wolfsburg - hometown of Volkswagen - in 1998, and opened its doors to the public two years later.

Located next to the main factory of Volkswagen, the Autostadt (German for car city) is an enormous theme park built on a 25-hectare site, attracting around two million visitors every year. Besides its hills and lakes, it is also noted for its ultra-modern architecture and design.

The main attractions at the Autostadt are seven brand pavilions - for the seven automobile brands that the Volkswagen Group currently owns, namely Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen, a museum and a car delivery centre where customers can pick up their new vehicles.

Part of the latter are two glitzy 48-metre tall glass cylindrical towers where brand new Volkswagens are stored after they are produced at the factory next door till they are due for delivery, usually within 24 hours. Visitors can even take a specially constructed glass lift up to the highest floor from inside the towers, so as to take in the stunning view of the Autostadt along with the city, as well as to view the highly sophisticated technology at work within the towers.
