Introduction and Outside

The 17” wheels which come as standard on the IONIQ feature plastic decorative bits, which do look fabulous

Hyundai builds a Prius… ok maybe not, but you could mistake the new IONIQ for one if it zipped past you.

The aerodynamic body shell does carry some resemblance to its Japanese rival. But overall, the Korean car maker has delivered very well on exterior styling.

Outside
One could get an initial sense that Hyundai did a little bit of looking over at Toyota’s shoulder while at the drawing board. Even down to the compact footprint of their wheelbases, both cars share the same 2,700mm. The Prius is however 70mm longer than the IONIQ’s 4,470mm length.

While the Prius looks more like an origami art form on a set of wheels, the IONIQ cuts a more pleasant-to-the-eye coupe-like silhouette.

Frontal styling sees a neat set of daytime running lights, which sit low in the front bumper recess, which is also the intake point for the front wheel air curtains.

The 17” wheels which come as standard on the IONIQ feature plastic decorative bits, which do look fabulous, and complements the look of the car. Additionally, Hyundai has gone two steps further by offering not only a full-sized spare wheel, but the same actual alloy.

There are some light touches of chrome which line the lower window frame and parts of the rear bumper. There is also a notable few blue coloured accents, in the form of the spoiler under the front bumper, headlamp surrounds and the ‘diffuser’ at the rear, giving a hint of Hyundai’s fuel-saving ‘Blue Drive’ Strategy.

The rear windscreen styling, like the Prius is a 2-piece unit, but lacks the rear wiper which the Toyota comes equipped with.
