Entry-level executive saloon models are usually boring stuff. They are powered by miniscule engines with mundane and gutless power outputs, and are spartanly equipped. Of course, everyone would want a top-of-the-range variant of a particular model, but budget constraints (to buy, tax, fuel and maintain) will probably put most people off. So, most of us will just have to make do with an entry-level variant then.
But if there’s one entry-level executive saloon that isn’t boring, then it has to be the recently launched Audi A4 - in its base 1.8 TFSI guise. We already discovered how good the new A4 package is in its top-of-the-line 3.2 quattro form, but this question remains – just how good is the “cheaper” and more affordable model?
Outwardly, the base model can be easily differentiated by the smaller alloy wheel - which somehow just seems too tiny for the flared wheel arches. And the eagle-eyed will also spot the different badge on the boot lid plus the lack of “quattro” insignias both at the front and back.
Just like the 3.2 quattro, the 1.8 TFSI can also be specified with an S-line body kit – that kit really ups the ante for the A4 in the looks department, don’t you think so? Nevertheless, the A4 is still a handsome looking junior executive with well-defined lines…despite those smaller alloy wheels.
As you would expect of an Audi, the A4’s interior scores all the right ticks in terms of build quality and perceived luxury. The driving position is just excellent - all thanks to the wide array of adjustments for the seat, and also the reach and rake adjustable steering wheel.
The switch gears are also a joy to use – they not only look good, but are also tactile to the touch. Although the factory stereo might not be some fancy high end Bang & Olufsen (like the ones in the 3.2 quattro), it can still shame those other system found in some other pricier sedans when it comes to sound quality.
