The "Golf" nomenclature has been around for thirty-five years already, and each generation is a constant improvement over the other. Notably, Mark 4 saw a much bulkier exterior - which is a remarkable difference over the rather square-shaped Mark 1 to 3.
Just when you thought you had it all worked out, along comes a new mob of engineers, thinkers and dreamers, and the holy order of things goes right out the window. With the Mark 5, many had thought that was the best hatchback ever produced by Volkswagen. But after five years it was introduced, age somehow caught up and a revamp was needed. And no, a normal nip and tuck just won't do - it has to be something that will keep it on top of the game.
So the saying goes, "history repeats itself first as tragedy, then as farce". Thankfully, the Mark 5 doesn't fit the former or the latter. Instead, it goes into history books as one of Volkswagen's best-selling car.
It is clear cut what the Mark 6's task is - to retain the reputation and hopefully outsell its predecessor even. After all, it's cheaper to manufacture now. Which should lead to a lower asking price and should appeal to a wider audience.
Exterior
"Stylish but mature" are the two keywords I conjured up at first sight of the Golf in the flesh. Contradicting, I know, but that's just how it is now - showing it has grown away from the cheeky flair its predecessor had.
It still maintains the overall visual of a typical hatchback, but where the French have gone slightly off, the Golf corrects it by being well proportioned. Ok, so the puny 16-inch alloys shod with 205/55 R-16 Bridgestone rubbers spoils it all - but as a whole, the Golf still leads the hatch category based on its visuals.
The front looks almost similar to the new Scirocco (which we test drove in Portugal last year). Both upper and lower grilles were stretched across, with the VW logo sitting proudly in the centre. You also get blackened headlamps housing the signals, main beams and daytime running lights - unfortunately, xenons are not available. Bigger wing mirrors with integrated signal repeaters are new item as well.
The Golf's rear remains the same, with only the tail lamps getting a whole new look. Gone are the large bulbous type - it now looks slimmer and sleeker. There's also a subtle spoiler (a bigger one would be nicer though), and a diffuser at the lower part of the bumper to give a touch of sportiness.
