Volkswagen introduces an even more affordable Golf in the form of the new 1.2 TSI variant. We give it a full thorough road test.

New dimension

Singapore's road tax structure means that cars with small engines are usually preferred by the masses over those with bigger motors - the tax is after all calculated by the displacement of the car's engine. It is of no surprise then when Volkswagen introduced the sixth generation Golf with 1.4-litre engines, the hatchback models flew out of the showroom forecourt like no other previous Golfs did. The Golf together with its 1.4-litre powered siblings, the Jetta and Touran were key to taking Volkswagen into the top ten of the best selling brands in Singapore last year.

Despite its unprecedented successes last year with downsized engines, Volkswagen has taken the downsizing trend even further recently with the debut of a 1.2-litre Golf variant. The new Golf 1.2 TSI sits under the Golf Sport and the Golf 1.4 TSI in the expanded Golf line-up.

On the outside, you can immediately recognize the 1.2 TSI from its more powerful siblings via the 16-inch ‘Mugello' five-spoke ally wheels and TSI badge on the boot lid. The latter has its three letters all finished in chrome while the 1.4 TSI features a badge with a red ‘I' and the Sport has its ‘S' and ‘I' in red. Other than the abovementioned, the lack of front fog lamps and a single exhaust tip instead of two, the 1.2 TSI looks like its 1.4-litre siblings on the outside.
