There's always something special about French cars that make them unmistakably Gallic. Whether it is their quirkiness or their unique style, French cars from Citroën, Peugeot and Renault just ooze character and a unique style. Conjure up cars like the Citroën DS and BX, Renault Avantime and Vel Satis and the Peugeot 504 and you'll know what I mean.
The 5008 is Peugeot's latest entry in the MPV fray. The last time the Lion had an MPV was with the 807, which wasn't offered here at all. Peugeot has a seven seater model in its local line-up for some time now, in the form of the 307 SW which became the 308 SW a few years back but these models can never be considered to be versatile enough to be MPVs as they are basically estate models with an extra row of seats.
First impressions are promising. There's a certain flair and style abut the way the 5008 looks when compared to its Japanese competitors as well as the boxy and square Volkswagen Touran. Up front, the 5008 no longer comes with the oversized snout seen in previous models like the 407 and older ones in the range like the 207 and 308 but the nose is no less stylish thanks to the wraparound headlamps, the ‘V' shape on the bonnet and the double radiator grille design. The huge, sloping windscreen gives the 5008 a dynamic side profile while the abruptly rising window line at the rear meets the distinctively shaped tail lamps, giving the latter a boomerang shaped profile when viewed from the flanks. There are also blistered wheel arches to make the flanks look less slab sided.
It is when viewed directly from the rear where the 5008 can look a tad nondescript despite the placement of the Lion badge at the base of the rear screen instead of on the tailgate itself. Overall, the 5008 is very much a smart looking two-box people carrier even though its Citroen C4 Grand Picasso cousin might look a tad more distinctive thanks to its more bulbous roof line and other details.
