We all know that buying a car in Singapore is crazy expensive (thanks to the mandatory COE all car owners have to pay) but that doesn’t mean that owning a car is only for the crazy rich. Well, perhaps not everyone will want to purchase a Mercedes-AMG GT and Audi R8 that can cost even more than an HDB flat, it may be smarter to take a look at how we can stretch our dollar with expensive-looking cars at a good price point or just one that does its job.

Skoda Octavia

There’s just a certain air of crazy rich premium-ness when you look at Skoda’s cars, and that’s exactly what the brand intended. The Skoda Octavia is far from pretentious as it is an extremely practical liftback style sedan that also looks great! The front grille has just the right amount of chrome embellishments surrounding it, with an edgy design alongside subtle creases in its side sheet metal.

Not only does the newly-styled headlamps complement the car’s edgy design, the daytime running lights on the Ambition Plus trim are cleverly positioned at the base of the lenses, visually carrying the grill’s chrome border to the far edges of the Octavia. The makers certainly do not leave out its back as its rear C-shaped tail lamps add to its classy-look by extending the car’s shoulder line to the sculpting of the boot lid.

Drivers of the Octavia can enjoy the simple and tasteful interior quality, with a shiny 8-inch colour touchscreen of the Bolero infotainment unit. There’s also ample space in the glove box, and various cubby holes to store all your essentials.

Even though it had not escaped the “right-sizing” trend, its 1.0 litre turbocharged engine has plenty of torque (200Nm). Together with its 7-speed Dual Sequential Gearbox (DSG) automatic transmission for quick shifting and well thought-out gear ratios, the Octavia hits the century-sprint at a decent 10 seconds. More importantly, the gearing of the Octavia is tuned for good fuel economy, perfect for Crazy Smart Asian Heartlanders.

Besides comfort for the driver, the Octavia also caters well to its passengers as its almost 2.7 metres of wheelbase grants generous legroom, even for rear passengers. The rear doors are large and they open wide, ensuring that you’ll arrive and exit in style.

Boasting a generous 590 litres of boot space, the Octavia features an impressive 1,010mm wide boot floor, all thanks to its torsion beam rear axle and vertical suspension damper combo. To examine exactly how big the Octavia’s boot space is, we compare it to the Toyota Corolla’s 414-litre boot and even the larger Honda Civic sedan’s boot space stands at 519 litres. More importantly, the liftback boot lid of the Octavia makes placing and retrieving all your items much easier.

Overall, the Skoda Octavia is truly a car for Crazy Smart Heartlanders as it looks a little more premium, yet having a similar price point as its Japanese counterparts.
