EDITOR'S PICKS - The Best Cars for Selfish Singles

Known in China as the “bare sticks holiday” because of how 11 looks numerically, Singles Day started out as a protest against Valentines’ Day by Nanjing University students in the 1990s, as a day where they celebrated their singlehood. In this editor’s picks, we’re presenting some coupes, perfect for singles this November 11.

Porsche Carrera T

A dream car to many who perhaps can’t fork out that 500k that costs more than a 5-room HDB BTO flat; but if you are a single who doesn't need to build a home or start a family, you may want to indulge in the Porsche Carrera T.

The Carrera T is a spiritual reincarnation of the original 911 T introduced back in the 1968. It sits in-between the Carrera and the Carrera S, as part of the 9-car line-up in the Carrera range. Other than not having the fancy fixed wing like all its Carrera siblings, the Carrera T is characterised by its Agate Grey Metallic wing mirrors and its 20 inch Titanium Grey rims. Its PASM sports chassis lowers the car by 20mm, and it is the only Carrera in the range to have the option of including the Porsche rear-axle steering system.

Its signature format flat-six engine with a displacement of 3 litres is good for 370hp, 130hp less than the naturally aspirated 4.0 found in the GT3. To ensure excellent drivability at any engine speed, its maximum twist of 450Nm is experienced from 1,750rpm, with its expansive torque band stretched to 5,000rpm. The Carrera T delivers its century sprint in a pleasant 4.2 seconds with the help of its mechanical deferential lock and shorter rear-axle gear ration, alongside its quick-shifting Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, ensuring that gear changes are seamless. The results show, with the automatic a narrow 0.3 seconds quicker to the 100 km/h mark than the seven-speed manual version.

Even though this car is built for the tracks, as a daily driver, the car still feels rather civilised and easy to live with. The steering is well-weighted, with the car offering nimble and tight point-and-shoot accuracy along with plenty of grip to spare from the rear, all thanks to its flat-six sitting between the rear wheels, pressing rubber harder onto tarmac. In terms of its appearances, it sits inbetween the aggressive GT3 and the milder Carrera S.
