Refresh the interior

With the sky-high prices of COEs today, you’re going to have to live with your car for a while.

Perhaps it’s time for you to buy a new car – or it would be if these were the early 2000s, a time when people regularly bought new cars, used them for 4 to 5 years, and traded them in when wear and tear began to show or expensive parts (like gearboxes) needed replacing.

But enough reminiscing. Welcome back to the real world. It’s 2015. With the sky-high prices of COEs today, unless you have at least 50k cash spare, you’re going to have to live with your car for a while.

Fortunately, it’s only in Singapore that cars are given a lifespan of 10 years – they are designed to last much longer, with proper care and maintenance. So if you have a wad of cash that’s burning a hole in your pocket, instead of buying a new car right away (wait, COEs are on the way down), try these moves first. You might fall in love with your ride all over again.


Refresh the interior

They say a car’s exterior is public property, because no matter what you do, you cannot watch over it 24/7. The interior however is another matter – that’s your own private paradise, to do with as you see fit. Here’s what you can do.

Groom the interior

Apparently, in one year, you’ll shed up to 3.6 kilograms of dead skin. Considering how much time you spend in the car, that’s a fair bit of dead skin you’re ferrying around.

So treat your car interior to a massive cleaning and disinfecting – leather and vinyl require special cleaning products to make them last longer, and your car-lining (typically made of felt) requires yet another. Send the carpets for a cleaning, and make sure you vacuum every single corner of your floor pan.


If the above really creeps you out – those of you with small kids will know what I mean – local interior upholstery companies can refit your car with the hide of a new, very exclusive-smelling cow, or any other material of your choice.

Discovered over the years that dark-coloured seats retain heat and are the bane of a public carpark? Get them swapped out to light beige, or to any fabric and pattern of your choice.

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise 

I know, I just said the same word three times. But, how about it then?

Now, you don’t have to go full-retard and tart up your car interior like you’re doing a boudoir, but consider how changing a few items can make ye same old stuff seem new again. Like for example, the mobile phone holder. The car perfume. Car mats. A new shifter knob. Maybe a new steering wheel cover.

That sort of thing goes a long way, and before you know it, your need for a new car has been sated and you’ll find something else less expensive to splurge on.
