Subaru Tribeca 5 + 2 Passengers Review
Tribeca B9 TESTED!

The SUV-free realm has shrunk again. Suddenly, Mazda, Audi and now, Subaru, has come up with their take on the ever popular crossover concept of an SUV. That list, is now down to a precious few – Saab, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Maserati, Mini, and maybe a few more.

Subaru has come close to doing so in the past, with the Legacy Outback and Forester, but the B9 Tribeca is undeniably a sport-utility vehicle. They’ve joined the bandwagon, and with a bang too.

This is also the largest Subaru ever, and limited edition WRX STi’s aside, the Tribecca is Subaru’s most expensive mass production car to date. Subaru Japan is even calling it its flagship model.

First Impressions

Walking to it, does indeed reveal the humungous proportions of this car. I personally love the styling of the headlamps, of which are presented in a 3 cylindrical shape. Foglamps are of course, standard equipment, so are all the necessary luxuries expected of a $131,500 car (without COE).

There are the side signal lamps mounted on the huge mirrors, lovely roof moldings, sunroof, a spoiler and gas mountings on the engine bonnet.

The Tribeca is easy to climb into. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this car, with myself not being a huge fan of big, lumbering cars, especially SUVs. I don’t drive much of these, especially after sampling a really horrid 1st generation model of another make a few years ago.

Call me a boy racer, but I am quite addicted to any sort of gauge that swings to its maximum indication, and then back, more commonly termed the “opening ceremony” amongst us locals.

There is cruise control, Audio satellite switches, a really good 9 speaker in car audio system, an overhead storage console (big enough for, presumably, a plethora of eyewear), individual climate control with a healthy, dust and pollen reducing charcoal filter, 2 really nice and sizeable cup holders, an individual rear cooling system, and electrically adjustable seats that store 3 settings and go back and forth, up and down and diagonally in 8 different directions.

Did you get all of that in one breath? I guess not…

This is definitely a testament of us Singaporeans getting better equipped cars nowadays, compared to the crap specced models we used to get in comparison to the rest of the world (USA, Europe and Australia) ten years ago.

The parking brake is foot operated, as is the increasing trend nowadays. I find the fact that the left foot rests below it rather disturbing, especially during the event of an accident. Foot space for the driver was rather disappointing as well.

It must be said though, that the driving position was not too bad, and although the steering was irritatingly close to the dashboard in typical SUV style, it was quite comfortable!
