BMW X5 xDrive35i Review
Bavarian bruiser

Last year, we had the chance to try out BMW’s top of the line X5 in xDrive50i. Its 4.4l twin turbo V8 proved that you can shove a 2 tonne monster faster than a sports car half its weight. This time around, we got our mitts on its younger brother the xDrive35i, which is still premium all-round and worth its weight in gold.

There’s always the question of why buy a huge 4x4 in Singapore, especially when all you get here are narrow roads, traffic jams and countless stop lights. There are no real off-road tracks you can bring the car to; not that you’d want to considering its nearly $350,000 price tag. And do you really need all-wheel drive?

The answer, some people suggest, comes in the form of the practicality that a big SUV offers. BMW calls the X5 a Sports Activity Vehicle, but nonetheless it offers loads of luggage space and the optional 7 seats should you need to haul extra passengers every now and then. To me though, that’s somewhat beside the point, granted you have MPVs for that.

I realised that in a big SAV like the X5, what you do get for the money is a huge ego boost, and an unparalleled view that is so much more valuable in urban driving than you would think. In truth, this car makes more of a statement than it does anything else, which I think was the whole point of it anyway.
