BMW 5 Series Sedan 528i Review
Never too late

BMW adds new four-cylinder variants to the F10 5 Series range. Raymond Lai checks out the misleadingly named 528i.

Introduction, styling

The German car manufacturers seem to be bent on making us confused with the way they badge their model variants. Volkswagen is guilty of confusion with its TSI moniker - - the color of the ‘S’ on the boot lid badge determines it the engine is a twin or turbocharged while Audi recently confused us by putting ‘V6T’ badges on the front wings of the S4 and S5 models when they’re powered by supercharged V6s rather than turbocharged ones. For many years, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have been badging some of their models differently from the engine sizes in them.

The latest German model to adopt a misleading moniker is the BMW 528i. Logically, one would think that the 528i is powered by a 2.8-litre motor but just like how BMW confused us with a 523i or 328i that were actually powered by 2.5-litre lumps previously, the 528i is not powered by a 2.8-litre lump but one that just displaces just 1997cc.

The current generation F10 5 Series has been a sales revelation since its launch nearly two years ago. This despite the fact that it was only available with relatively big engines that are more than 2000cc in displacement. As Singapore’s tax system favours cars with smaller engines that are 2000cc or smaller in displacement, the 5 Series has the potential to do even better if it is available with a smaller engine. The 2-litre powered 5 Series variants are now here in the form of the 520i and the 528i, with the latter model tested here.

Outwardly, the new 528i can be distinguished from other 5 Series variants via the boot lid badge and its reasonably sized 18-inch alloy wheels. Two years on, the ubiquitous F10 5 still looks contemporary and modern even though the latest Audi A6 looks more athletic and sportier.
