The Passat has traditionally been a bit of a boxy car; all that has changed. The 2015 version is a smooth and sophisticated looker with a classic (BMW-like) side indent, discreet rear LED lights and beautifully integrated LED front light housings that give the front end a very smart yet purposeful low-line look. The high boot continues the refined style look and gives an overall planted stance both on the move and standing still. better still, the design offers excellent visibility - it poops all over the Sirocco in comparison.
The finish is superb, and panel fit typically Germanic. The only design issue that jarred with me was the tacky "BlueMotion" badge on the boot. Everything else is utterly Gisele Bundchen; VW say the car looks "not whimsical, but expressive". That's about right.
Under the sleek exterior, the Passat is pretty good too. It packs a 1798 cc four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit driving the wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch box to give just under 180bhp, with a healthy 250Nm of torque all the way from 1250 to 5000rpm. This gives a very smooth and flat delivery which matches the car's competent feel yet still gives plenty of go if you floor it. The makers claim a top speed of just over 230kph, and a competent sub-eight second 100kph time.
The natty ten-spoke 17-inch alloys carry Continental Sport rubber that give a very smooth an quiet ride, yet grip like chewing gum on a blanket when braking hard; there is also Brake Assist and auto-braking if the car is in a collision to help avoid multi-car pileups.
The new model uses alloys extensively in the all-independent suspension to give both lower overall weight (down 85kg on the previous model) and a more supple ride, helped by a slightly lower stance (10mm less) than before. Both these things have helped pare back consumption to a claimed 7.3l/100km average cycle (VW says this is a 17% improvement, but that seems an awful big jump . . ). The deep and uncluttered boot offer an impressive 586-litres of space; more with the back seats down.
Fast and efficient. Good and reasonable quotation.
