Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Review
Last hurrah

I’ll be honest. This is the first time I’ve got into a Porsche and actually had the key in my pocket. For every motoring enthusiast out there, the first drive in any of the venerable marques is a most cherished, slightly dizzying butterflies in the stomach experience. Porsche is most definitely amongst the best; and what a way to pop my Porsche cherry, with the range topping 911 Carrera GTS.

Now I won’t go on about the heritage and the racing pedigree that Porsche, and indeed the GTS range comes from, because let’s face it – Porsche has a relatively small customer base (the car costs over $600,000 here) and needs to sell cars to have change to develop each new generation. Sure you have the “regular” Macan and Cayenne for that, but what better way to capture the attention of the existing 911 customer base, than to stick it with some of the most desirable 3 letters in the motoring world, give it a power bump (30bhp over the Carrera S to 424bhp) and throw lots of go faster options at it?

Whilst the diehard Porsche fans might be crying blasphemy at the moment, I’m going to say from the outset that you don’t need to be well versed in the Porsche bible in order to enjoy a car like the GTS. It was made so that anyone who loves driving can step into it and immediate appreciate what a great sports car it is.

The internet is awash with the nitty gritty that is the difference between the Carrera S and GTS, and how it compares against the track special 911 GT3 blah blah blah. But say for a moment you suddenly wanted to buy the best all-round sports car in the market at the moment, and you don’t know the first thing about Porsches except that they make pretty good ones; let me tell you that you should probably begin your search with this car. Because it’s going to set the benchmark for what a sports car can and should be like; and don’t worry about the pedigree and history – they’ve come together to deliver this.
