The new BMW 7 Series isn’t exactly what I’d call visually arresting. But, and it’s a big but, it is extremely well proportioned and stays true to the handsome, sporty and muscular yet with a hint of refined elegance looks that the F series first delivered back in 2008.

The F series 7 changed quite radically how BMWs looked, from the polarising Bangle era to a more poised, focussed and dynamic look that won many a customer over. BMW has taken this design philosophy and tweaked it, the result of which is successful in a macro way.

The iconic shoulder line that gives present day BMWs their broad stance and commanding presence has been broadened; more lines run from the front to the back along the doors giving the new 7 Series more perceptible chiselling. Six lines run longitudinally across the bonnet up from two in the F02, giving the car a more dynamic and athletic look than before.

At the back, BMW has modified the three L-shaped LED light bars that so characterised the F series into just one L-bar with another horizontal one above it. Minimalistic, but none the worse for it. Turn signal indicators at the rear have also become a whole patch rather than individual LEDs, making them more eye-catching and even more substantial.

It is worth noting that the car I was loaned featured the optional M Sport kit. Standard cars will get what BMW calls Design Pure Excellence; in short – loads of chrome on the front and rear bumpers as well as chrome lined windows, Hofmeister kink and mirror stalks. Yes, the hockey stick at the bottom of the doors that runs from the Air Breather vent behind the front wheels is in chrome too. The one I got however has all the aforementioned chrome bits in high gloss black as is the M way. The front intakes are also enlarged and made sharper to give an angry look that befits the most powerful letter stuck to the sides of the car and illuminated in the door sills.

Truth be told, I’d pay the extra $11,000 or so for the M Sport kit which also comes with the evolved 20” M Sport wheels. Evolved because it’s clearly an evolution of the existing BMW M wheel designs which many a BMW owner has adopted aftermarket on their regular cars. With the M Sport kit, the 7 Series gains a level of sportiness and athleticism that makes it look smaller than it actually is (especially in this gorgeous Singapore Grey metallic paint) but doesn’t sacrifice the stately-ness and presence that tells everyone around you on the road that you’re extremely successful. I’m not a huge fan of the chrome on the standard cars; the hockey stick looks especially out of place. But I’m not the sort of customer BMW is targeting and I don’t have the $11,000 so..
