Before you get to the interior, you will be welcomed by a light carpet courtesy of some clever LED projectors under the car. Keen eyed observers will also notice that the light carpet’s design is replicated in other light fixtures within the car. And there are many lighting bits and bobs in the car. Ambient lighting is standard; you can choose from an array of different colours to bathe the cabin in the most sensual manner when driving at night. If you decide that your rear passengers will get bored at night however, you can always opt for the Sky Lounge which sees LEDs illuminate the standard panoramic sunroof in a mesmerising light show.

After you’re done being enthralled by the lights, you may wish to try out the bewildering array of technology BMW has introduced in this car. Gesture control allows you to do things like reject a phone call with a dismissive wave of your hand; turn your finger in the air clockwise or counter-clockwise to increase or decrease the volume of your media and change the current track playing. In practice though, most people accustomed to BMW controls will still use the convenient steering wheel mounted volume buttons or default to the iDrive knob to do whatever they used to do. Gesture control is also not particularly refined or sensitive, but is fairly intuitive. However if you’re the sort that likes to talk with hand actions, you might find yourself accidentally changing the channel of the radio. And in keeping with the times there’s also the new touchscreen capable screen that will function much like a smartphone and accept commands like pinch zoom and swiping.

The 3D surround view cameras that come as standard are a godsend in tight parking spaces; they will save you costly repairs on curbed rims and scratched paint during parking or manoeuvring in tight spots. You get an updated Park Assist which will now do vertical parking (it used to only be parallel) as well as a car wash view which is probably slightly irrelevant here. Pinch the air with two fingers and you can rotate the view all around the car to see all of your surroundings with gesture control. Although if you’re going to check your surroundings slowly with the system, people waiting behind you while you park will be rather annoyed. What you don’t get though, is the remote parking that you might have seen on YouTube. Apparently that’s a homologation issue, but we’ll let the authorities decide what’s good for us like we always do. You do get the slightly large display key.

Heads-up display is back and better, enlarged and made to display more stuff. BMW still refuses to let you see how many revs you’re using on the HUD, so folks hoping for that will be disappointed again. Massage seats for front and rear are included to keep your back and posterior happy on longer drives; seat ventilation and heating is also standard together with adjustable rear seats. Four-zone climate control is also standard, and you can option the Executive Lounge Package if you want to sit fully reclined with a leg rest up front. There’s also the optional Touch Command which gives you control over the iDrive using a Samsung tablet docked in the centre armrest that you can use as a normal tablet out of the car; rear seat entertainment sold separately.

My test car came with the optional Nappa leather too, and I can tell you that the extremely luxurious, soft and supple seats are worth every cent. With the M Sport kit too comes Fineline wood trim in black, which complements the sporty yet classy theme inside and out. The Ambient Air Package first seen on the S-Class also features in the new 7er but the scent is so subtle it’s virtually non-existent.
