Let’s talk about the styling and design changes in this LCI first. Being the Life Cycle Impulse (read: another of BMW’s fancy names which simply means facelift) you’d expect more subtle changes and corrections (if any) to the existing design rather than huge redesigns of just about everything like Mercedes did with the E-Class a while ago. And you’d be right, because BMW would be entirely daft to change the F30 dramatically.
It’s a great looking car to begin with, winning many a design award globally. So BMW has retained the look of the car and added a few subtle tweaks. The infamous all-LED rear lights are finally here; BMW has a bad habit of giving you light bulbs at the start and then changing to LEDs nearer the end of the life cycle of the 3er. This time around they’ve also fitted LED headlamps as standard, revised over the xenons on the pre-LCI.
You also get the sport line as standard, which basically adds lots of black trim to the window frames, rear and front bumpers as well as a sporty-themed interior. The interior is all black with contrast red stitching on the steering wheel and red trim around the doors and dashboard. This is a much welcome design that keeps practically, sportiness and just a touch of class with a few high gloss black bits all rolled properly into one. Otherwise it’s still largely the same as before, driver-centric and all and still a little short of the C-Class’ quality.
Oh and the ridiculous cup holder tray thing in the centre console is now gone. You no longer have to find a space to stash the tray should you wish to use the cup holders; it’s now a simple sliding door. There, that wasn’t so hard now was it BMW?
Also the seats are made of what BMW calls Sensatec (again, read: fake leather). They don’t feel particularly bad or anything and they’ll wear a lot better than genuine leather, but if you go for black they’ll also burn your behind off when you park in the sun for a whole day.
The only criticism you could possibly have for the styling is this: the car doesn’t look much different from its forebear so others might mistake you for having the old car even when you’ve actually splashed out 50% of the price in cash. The upshot is that people won’t think you have a lot of cash. Well not that much anyway.
Fast and efficient. Good and reasonable quotation.
