Volvo V40 T2 Review
Chic comfort

We tested the hot-hatch version of the V40 a couple of years back and we liked its colour.

Of course we liked other things too; but just look at that gorgeous Rebel Blue paintwork.

Being that it was the souped-up version of the V40, the R-design was a bit of a looker and quite different from what the word Volvo might conjure in your mind’s eye. Yet it wasn’t as pleasing to drive as it was to look at and really didn’t do its looks justice.

But when you take the expensive running shoes and body hugging compression wear off the car, what you are left with is an honest and simple hatch back that still doesn’t look half bad. And you lose the expectation that it would be athletic.

So it takes on a different life and becomes something of a normal person’s car, not one of those things for manical youngsters who drive like the road tax is licensing for leaving rubber on the tarmac.

That is not to say that the V40 is boring or anything; on the contrary, it’s what Volvo suspiciously calls a “sports hatch”, and even without the R-design bodykit still looks like it might be interesting to pilot.

Particularly because there’s a new power plant under the hood – Volvo’s all in-house T2 engine is built from scratch somewhere in Sweden, which is a new direction for the company as the old T4 was from Ford.

So with nearly as much torque as the outgoing 1.6l engine, let’s see what this new one does for the V40.
