Introduction

The facelifted Peugeot 508 was a rather respectable thing we felt when we tested it last year. Decently equipped and much improved over its original version, there was little to complain about except maybe the price tag.

With the measures that the newly sworn in government imposed not so long ago, cars above 1600 cc and featuring more than 130 bhp had to go into the “big car” segment. So you can’t have a really small car with a small engine but a big turbo without paying them more.

However, things get even more curious when big cars like the 508 start to go the other direction and try to compete with tiny little hatchbacks for a piece of the Cat A pie. With the aforementioned shove of quite a few cars to Cat B, cars that were already in Cat B but didn’t have traditional popularity would naturally suffer as a result of further crowding.

This means that to survive, manufacturers and their authorised dealers had to be smart about their product strategy. You see if you could have loads more space without having to pay extra of engine capacity or power that you don’t use fully anyway, a car like the new Peugeot 508 BlueHDi might suddenly make a lot of sense.
