Introduction, differences

Having driven the Cooper S variant of the MINI Clubman, I was rather impressed with the way the car felt and drove. That was courtesy of the peachy engine that punched well above its engine CC and a well-balanced chassis that had predictable and stable handling with the adjustable dampers.

So I’ll be honest; when I first picked up the base model Clubman I was a little bit sceptical about the small 1.5l three cylinder engine. Partly because the engine is BMW derived (and has suspiciously identical performance numbers) and I didn’t think it was all that awesome. And partly because I knew it wouldn’t outdo the peppy 2.0l Cooper S engine.

Also missing are the S badges around the car, and a different front grille to separate the more expensive brother and make those who spend the extra money feel a bit special. The wheels have also shrunk an inch to 17” and come with a different design. Besides those little things the Cooper and Cooper S look virtually identical and it would take a bit of scrutiny to tell them apart.

On the inside, you get what MINI calls Leather Chester – beautifully stitched leather seats which you should totally buy in this gorgeous blue colour. Elsewhere most of the Clubman fare remains, except the screen has gone down from 8.8” to 6.5”. This is because the Cooper doesn’t get the navigation package, which if you’re familiar with BMW means you get a downgraded iDrive. Same applies.

You also don’t get shift paddles because the gearbox is different (6-speed rather than 8) but more on that in a bit.
