The Mazda 6 definitely had something all of us wanted, but after you take one glimpse, or rather, drive, in the 6 MPS, there is no going back, not even with the normal models. This car is just, SO, good.
I guess, they did it in such a way that the basic 6 already manages to be executively styled, and unpretentious. It isn’t terribly expensive, being able to match that of most cars on the market.
That winning combination has sold millions of Volkswagen Golfs, Corollas (as blatantly straight forward as they might be) and any other best seller you could probably think of.
The basic 6 is a nice and competent car despite not being outstanding in a single particular area.
Well then, you never thought they’d use that car as the base for one of Mazda’s fastest cars yet. Just like how the proverbial secondary school nerd discovers the joys and benefits of going to the gym, the mediocre powered Mazda 6 has gained grunt – A LOT of grunt.
Engine
Under the bonnet finds you a, 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine that has been heavily revised, strengthened and dealt with the same way as how one would turbocharge it. Turbo it they did. They also coupled it with a meatier 6 speed manual and all wheel drive.
Nothing new you say? It’s true. Subaru, Audi and Volvo and up to recently, Mitsubishi (remember the venerable VR4?), have followed suit for their executive sedans. This one is a little different when you take a closer look.
Avid petrol heads will definitely notice a few interesting things with Mazda's methods. The engine uses direct injection technology. It squirts your hard earned, money exchanged for petrol straight into the cylinders.
The spark timing is also controlled by computer. According to Mazda, this turbo produces really good low-down torque and lower pollution levels. For those who are familiar with the system used in Volkswagen and Audi FSI engines, hello!
It has 265 horses and 380nm, available from the low 2000s in engine RPM.
