If you are confused by the name Levorg, which sounds a bit AVP frankly, then you’re not alone.

What it really is, is an amalgamation of Legacy, Revolution and Touring, none of which was my first guess.

Once you get past the anime name that isn’t quite so surprising considering from whence this car hails, you have a car that’s actually quite easy to appreciate. You get Legacy-sized proportions which make for a healthy size; you also get classic Subaru sporty looks which will certainly set boy racers’ hearts on fire. There’s also the practicality from a wagon body – the sum of which added to the 1.6l turbocharged petrol engine is quite the recipe for success.

Subaru is no stranger to any of the above things and this then appears to be the mix tape of the very core competencies that make it such a success commercially and in racing. So let me tell you what it’s like to put your foot way down and hear the turbocharger spool.


The new boxer engine Subaru has placed in the Levorg comes with direct injection and a turbocharger, both of which shouldn't surprise you.

What will though is just how imperceptible the turbo lag is. Drive it without knowing what’s under the hood and you’ll be hard pressed to tell whether it’s turbocharged or not, because the way this engine delivers power is so linear. There’s only a slight hint of surge when you go hard on the gas and the power builds throughout the entire rev range smoothly and quickly, revving more like a naturally aspirated motor than a force-fed one.


170 PS and 250 Nm are delivered to all four wheels in true Subaru style, which doesn’t sound like much because it isn't and you can feel it. It’s not the fastest thing on four wheels Subaru has ever made, but it certainly is no slouch once you get the drive train going. There’s a slight lag when starting off, because this car has Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT rather than a conventional cog swapper. What it excels at though is not appearing like a CVT, and because it helps the engine deliver that NA smoothness while giving you the illusion of shifting gears through paddle shifters it’s really quite a peach to operate.

Push the car through bends with some pace and you’ll find yourself going quicker and quicker with each successive bend. The car’s handling is excellent, with all-wheel drive grip and a sporty suspension that eliminates almost all body roll the turn-in is precise without understeer. Go too quickly though and you’ll find out that the car is happy to give you it’s rear end in a very controlled manner that is quite a bit of fun until the traction control kicks in and effectively cancels the party.

And for some reason it can’t seem to be turned off completely, but that’s probably for the best anyway since your insurers probably wouldn’t appreciate it too much I’ll bet.

While the car handles plenty well, it does lack a bit of punch that a larger capacity engine could provide but in daily use you won’t find too much to complain about. That said the agility and responsiveness of the car overall is excellent; it will impress all your mates. Trust me I tried.
