Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon E200 Exclusive Review
Executive Establishment

Introduction & Exterior

The current W213 represents a major leap over the W212 it replaces

You might just miss it on the road. There is some S Class and there is some C Class in the new car. The Mercedes-Benz E class is the benchmark for most auto makers, who want to produce an Executive full-sized sedan. Going back to the days when the pre-E Class models, the W123 and W124 models plied our roads, and behind the wheel, you could find either a “towkay” or a higher-up executive, the E Class simply appealed to so many.

The current W213 represents a major leap over the W212 it replaces. There are options ranging from near full autonomous driving, to “Active Lane-Change Assistant” which allows the driver to switch lanes when it is safe.

The new car is 43mm longer than the car it replaces, filling in a footprint of 4,923mm. Additional interior space comes from the longer wheelbase of 2939mm, which is 65mm longer.

The longer car visually sits lower, casting a coupe-like silhouette. Doing away with the large chunky design of the previous E Class (which I personally liked as well), the new car has adopted a sweeping long elegant pinch in the sheet metal, spanning from the front fender of the car, where a hint of the design element appears in the daytime running lights, and tapers off in the rear fender, just before the rear tail lamps begin.

Front treatment for our Executive trim test car, saw it equipped with the tri-striped grille and hood ornament. The lower butterfly shaped mesh grille is accented with chrome trim. The Avantgarde trim car on the other hand, has a sportier grille with two stripes, and carries a large logo in the middle.

Within the large wheel arches are multi-spoke 18” units, although not to my taste, they did work with the overall look of the executive sedan.

Rear treatment gives a hint of C Class, albeit with a wider stance, and the tail lamps carries over the familiar traditional Mercedes-Benz striped design. At the bottom lip of the rear bumper, two chrome tail pipe mouldings sit over the actual exhaust pipes.
