In the driver’s seat, you are greeted by a large shiny skateboard deck

In the driver’s seat, you are greeted by a large shiny skateboard deck. This is car’s instrument binnacle and in-car infotainment, built seamlessly as one unit, and spans from in-front of the driver, and covers the middle of the dash.

In following the design direction of the bigger S Class, the dash carries four air conditioning vents sited below the infotainment display unit, and surround by what is known as a burr walnut high gloss brown surface, which spans across the dash, and onto both front and rear door cards.

The infotainment system does deserve attention, providing users with the option of setting up how the car behaves, from the colour selection of ambient interior lighting with no less than sixty-four colours to choose from; to how you may want to have the transmission, engine and suspension to react in your own customised drive mode.

Below the infotainment unit, the air conditioning controls are sited, with a series of metal switches, which provide air controls for four different zones. Like most Mercedes-Benz cars, controls for the infotainment unit are located in the centre console, where normally the transmission selector would be placed. This includes a selector wheel and a trackpad to make navigating the vast menu of options possible. Some considerations were however made, with the more commonly used drive mode select and volume switches built in as metal switches for ease of access and operation.

The instrument binnacle too is customisable, with options for wayfinding, and “how economically are you really driving” displays which can be selected. Believe me, the list can just go on and on, depending on the amount of options you want to spec the car with. But the spoils that the E Class provides, are not just toys, and do come into play in real world situations.

The quality of the Nappa leather seats and the stitch are better than what I have seen in what Audi and BMW provide, perhaps with the new Volvo S90 closely matching the Merc. The way the seats were formed, the effort that was placed into the stitch, more importantly, they seem to fit hand-in-glove when you lean into the backrest. Rear passengers get plenty of headroom, and the long wheelbase comes into play here, with plenty of space to stretch those legs, and just losing out a little compared to the Audi A6 Sedan.

The E Class retains the same boot space as the previous car. An excellent 540 litres means that you can load three sets of golf gear with ease, and rear seats fold 60/40 in the event that you do need to load longer items.
