The mid-sized MPV sector has been hugely competitive ever since Renault invented with the Scenic more than a decade ago. Now there are all sorts of mid-sized MPVs to suit many budgets and needs.
Among the seven-seater models these days, the popular ones are the Volkswagen Touran, Toyota Wish and the Honda Stream. Besides this trio, there are of course others to choose from like the Chevrolet Orlando, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, Peugeot 5008 and last but not least, the Mazda5. The latter has just been through a thorough refresh to improve its chances in this highly competitive market.
The Mazda5 was first introduced in 2005 as the replacement for the simple but yet effetive Premacy as Mazda’s mid-sized people carrier. The 5 received a minor refresh in 2008 and at the 2010 Geneva Motorshow, the latest model made its debut. After a short delay, the new model is now here in Singapore. With an all-new look and styling, Mazda obviously calls the latest 5 a new generation model but without a new interior and similar mechanicals and powertrain as previously, the new 5 is more of a styling refresh rather than being all-new.
While the recently revised 3 features minimal exterior changes for the updated model, the 5 gets a thoroughly comprehensive exterior makeover for this latest update. At 4541mm in length, the new model is marginally shorter than the old car’s 4565mm length. The new car is just 5mm narrower than its predecessor while wheelbase and height are common to both models.
The new model features the same nose treatment as the 3 while the flanks feature the brand’s Nagare design themes that consist of wave-like lines on the sides. The rear loses the old model’s high mounted tail lamps which in turn makes it look heavier and clumsier than previously. In addition, some also say that the 5’s new rear look very much like a past generation’s Toyota Previa. Overall, the new 5 just doesn’t look as dynamic and athletic as before, even though it is slightly shorter and narrower than the model it replaces.
Prompt action, good service and keep it up. Will back again in future. Thumb up for Angie Ng
