Performance, ride and handling

Under the new set of clothes, the 5 features a similar powertrain and underpinnings as previously. The SVT (Sequential Valve Timing) equipped 1999cc naturally aspirated four-pot motor musters 142bhp and 180Nm, output numbers that are pretty similar as before. Even though maximum torque only comes in at a somewhat high 4500rpm, the engine is tractable enough at low to mid revs, which is hugely essential for a people carrier. Without the aid of forced induction though, mid-range urge is obviously not particularly strong in the 5 when compared to say, the VW Touran but there’s just about enough go to deliver reasonable performance on the whole. As with most Japanese makes, Mazda doesn’t quote official performance figures for its models like the 5. but we reckon roughly 11 and a half seconds for its century sprint time is just about spot on.

Refinement is not one of the engine’s strongest suits - rev it past 4000rpm and it starts to get vocal and trashy. This is definitely not the most refined motor in the MPV class and a far cry from the smooth four-cylinders from Honda.

The MZR engine is hooked up to a five-speed automatic gearbox. The transmission offers smooth and incise shifts and is responsive to the driver’s throttle inputs too. It also offers a ‘+/-‘ manual mode for the keen driver. On the downside, the gearbox’s five ratios means the gear aren’t stacked as closely than one with six or seven gears. This in turn hampers outright performance a tad.

With no changes to the platform or suspension, the 5 feels remarkably similar to drive as previously. Handling is highly competent for an MPV with such a tall and upright stance. The steering is OK in terms of feel and feedback but body control is really good – it hardly leans into corners despite its height. There’s just a feeling of lightfootedness and agility in the 5’s overall dynamics. The 5 is after all,  another model out of Mazda’s ‘zoom zoom’ product philosophy. One drive in the 5 and you’ll know that this MPV is made for those who enjoy driving. The ride is also comfortable – the suspension soaks up bumps and humps with aplomb despite its relatively taut handling.
