Volvo S90 T6 Inscription Review
Thor's (Plush) Hammer

Introduction and Exterior

If you do look close enough, there is just a hint here and there of the very beautiful P1800, which Volvo produced in the very early 1960s

Coasting along in a cushy cloud, lined with open pore wooden surfaces and comfortable Nappa leather seats, one could assume a ride in some hyper rich limo.

My experience with the Volvo S90 T6 Inscription, revealed plenty about how the Swedes have spent sleepless hours, building a car which would deservingly be on par with their German counterparts in the Executive Sedan segment.

From prototype to production car, nothing much was left over on the prototyping table when the design was finally approved.

Like nothing we have seen before from Volvo, we expected the same thick-shouldered cars, the brief about how safe they were… Which we were far from wrong, but at the same time, the S90 delivers astoundingly more in terms of quality, how good it looks from all angles, and the amount of creature spoils as standard.

Its imposing road presence is all thanks to the wide front grille and headlamp combination, the grille features their trademark “waterfall’ design, and styled inward in a concave manner. The T6 grille also gets chrome treatment. The headlamps carry on them the car’s daytime running lights, shaped as Thor’s Hammer. Within the cluster is an innovative full LED assembly for night time illumination.

A long bonnet, and what Volvo likes to call a “dash to axle” measurement, gives a sense of “premiumness”, according to Volvo. The front wheel sits further away from the driver, giving the impression of a traditional longitudinally mounted engine and transmission layout, powering the rear wheels, when in actual fact, the engine sits transverse. But it does look really grand I must say.

Below the S90’s reassuring door shoulders, the T6 gets fancy-thick chrome side mouldings. Beautifully large wheel arches are filled with 19” diamond cut ten-spoke alloys. I truly love it when design rules are carried over into a next generation, or to a new segment car. In designing theS90, Volvo has stuck with tradition, and had the quarter glass design element retained and integrated into C pillar of their car.

Rear tail lamp design comes in the form of a pair of large-red parenthesis, with their top edges flanking a large “VOLVO” nameplate on the boot lid. Twin tail pipe covers at the bottom of the car, carry through the styling of the chromed mouldings.

If you do look close enough, there is just a hint here and there of the very beautiful P1800, which Volvo produced in the very early 1960s.
