Interior

Banding all this wood, tech and air conditioning vents together visually, is a thick metal insert which spans across the dash, made to appear to prop all this pretty goodness up

The Swedes have taken a very different approach to the interior styling of their executive sedan. While you’d find plenty of technological clutter from most cars in this segment, Volvo had opted to go the direction of being minimalist. The tech is there, but neatly hidden away. In the middle of the dash, sits a 9” touch screen infotainment system, positioned quite uniquely in portrait format, which displays the car’s information. Within this, you get phone connectivity via Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay. Also included are internet connectivity capabilities, and SatNav, which is also is reflected on the versatile 12.3” Adaptive Digital Display. Those who believe that MP3s offer terrible sound (me), have also been catered for, with a well-hidden CD player in the centre storage box. Why of course you can still have your MP3s by way of USB and auxiliary connectivity.

Most of us would just expect swirly walnut coated in layers of glossy varnish, to adorn the dash, which can look a little “ah pek”. Volvo on the other hand, being Swedish-different opted for open pore walnut trim for the doors and across the dash. Wooden panels are carefully crafted, with grain flowing at opposing diagonal angles for both the left and right sides of the car, only to meet visually in the middle, by way of a spring loaded compartment cover. There is also a roller shutter type lid for the cup holders and cigarette lighter compartment. On close inspection, you can tell that they have not held back on their attention to detail. Cut from a single piece of wood, the roller shutter slides effortlessly away, with attention in detail in keeping the diagonally positioned grain of each slat aligned.

Banding all this wood, tech and air conditioning vents together visually, is a thick metal insert which spans across the dash, made to appear to prop all this pretty goodness up.

Front seats are wide and comfortable, with two memory settings. We were hoping that the steering rack and rake would come automated too, but it didn’t. Within the very long 2,941mm wheelbase, the S90 boasts the best rear legroom in its class. Incidentally, there will be an S90 available with an even longer wheelbase, providing even more space to uncurl those toes, but it will not be available locally. The unlucky person who ends up as the fifth passenger would be relieved to know that the wide 1,879mm width factored in butt space for the middle-rear passenger, though there is that transmission tunnel to deal with.

Rear air conditioning controls mirror the frontal touch screen display, allowing you to adjust fan speed, temperature and air direction.

The 500 litre boot is not the largest in its class, falling behind the new Mercedes-Benz E Class by 40 litres. The flat boot floor and the near-square shape of it though, ensure that you can make very good use of the space provided. The 60:40 split rear seats can be folded down, with a touch of a button located behind the rear headrests, if more space is required.
