Introduction, styling

The Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 both defined the SUV genre for urbanites rather than for off-road use or jungle trekking. While the RAV4 was popular with the young and sporty sort, the CR-V seemed to appeal to more matured types.

Honda obviously scrutinised the profile of CR-V customers when developing the new, fourth generation model. From the way it looks, the new variant seemed to have matured further and grown up in more ways than one.

On the outside, the new CR-V’s styling is an evolution of the previous model’s. The new model has an even more elegant and sophisticated approach to its exterior styling. The previous model’s distinctive double floating grille nose has been ditched in favour of Honda’s current corporate nose treatment which consists of triple horizontal chrome slats flanked by swept back headlamps.

The side profile is both elegant and sporty thanks to a sloping roofline. Like its predecessor, there’s a hint of the first generation Stream in the way the rear three quarter windows taper down towards the rear. At the back, the high mounted tail lamps are reminiscent of the previous model’s but the tailgate features a more sloping profile than previously for an even sleeker look, which some say makes the new model look a tad like the Volvo XC60 somewhat at the rear. Like its predecessor, the tailgate is a top-hinged one rather than side-hinged like on early generation CR-Vs.

At 4550mm in length, 1820mm wide and 1685mm wide, the new model is pretty similar in dimensions to the model it replaces but the more sloping rear and the curvaceous C-pillar treatment have somehow managed to make the new model look noticeably longer than the old one. All in all, the new CR-V is a very well proportioned mid-sized SUV with the right mix of looks.
