Introduction & Exterior

In any case, the SLC doesn’t need heavy make-up to look attractive

When the original Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster debuted some 20 years ago now (my how does time fly), it brought about a revolution in open-top motoring. Its folding hard-top roof, the automotive world’s first such application in decades, sparked off a trend that lasted well into the early years of the millennium. At one point it appeared that nearly every manufacturer had a convertible with a hard-top roof in its line-up.

That trend has faded away somewhat, with many finding hard-tops slow, cumbersome and heavy, but the SLK has lasted three generations while sticking to its guns and retaining the folding hard-top that has formed much of its identity. There has been another major change now though with the mid-life facelift of the third generation, and the SLK is now called the SLC.

The renaming is meant to put the car in line with Mercedes’ new branding strategy, which classifies its vehicles roughly according to size. So the SLC is therefore grouped with the ‘C’ class of vehicles, which include the, erm, C-Class and the GLC crossover SUV. But what else has changed though?

At first glance, the exterior changes are fairly hard to spot. It would probably take a trained eye to pick out the slightly revised grille that now mirrors the look of what we’ve seen on recent Merc models. There are also redesigned headlights, and a few extra vents here and there to give it a more muscular stance.

At the back there are some minor touch ups to the lights and lower bumper treatment with a few chrome bits here and there, but that’s about it really.

In any case, the SLC doesn’t need heavy make-up to look attractive. Just look at its sleek profile with sexy curves all over the place. And then of course, there is the main attraction: the electric folding hard-top roof. 20 seconds is all it takes for the fancy contraption to fold away, and get you from coupe security to roadster beauty. The roof can even be operated at speeds of up to 40km/h too, ideal for showing off as you cruise down Orchard Road peak hour traffic.
