BMW 3 Series Sedan 335i M Sport Review
3 Kings

Raymond Lai checks out the new BMW 3 Series and concludes if it ihas the potential to be the king of the compact exec class.

Introduction, styling

In the past, the BMW 3 Series has somewhat been regarded by many as the definitive junior executive model that money can buy. The 3 Series’ sporty nature, strong image and performance have made it the ride of choice among aspiring executives. The last generation E90 model though, faced big threats from highly accomplished competitors like the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

This year sees the 3 Series entering its sixth generation. It might sound a tad cliché but the newest model, dubbed the F30 needs to be the most complete and convincing iteration of BMW’s junior executive saloon yet, to counter the double threat from the Four Rings and the Three-pointed Star.

BMW has given us some controversial looking cars in the last decade – well, look at the last generation 7 Series and the first 1 Series and you’ll know what I mean. With current generation models like the 5 Series, X3 and 7 Series though, Munich’s style gurus have toned down Chris Bangle’s controversial and awkward design themes from the last generation models.

At 4624mm in length, the new model is a significant 93mm longer than its E90 predecessor. Correspondingly, the F30 is also wider and taller than the E90. From the rear, the new 3 bears a striking resemblance to the popular 5 Series so much so that many will easily mistake it for a 5 if there are no model badges on the boot lid. With that typical long bonnet of a BMW and a long wheelbase, the new 3 features even better judged proportions than its 5 Series big brother’s.

It is up front where the new 3 Series looks its most distinctive. The low nose and slim, elongated headlamps give the 3 a shark-like snout that is quite possibly the sportiest looking of any of the current BMW models.

With an aggressive snout and handsome proportions overall, the new 3 is one good-looking car and is arguably the most handsome of any current BMW model. The range topping 335i Sport tested here can be differentiated from the lesser 328i by its 18-inch five-spoke wheels, 335i badges on the boot lid as well as the twin exhaust tailpipe arrangement that is similar to the old 335i’s.
