Well Grounded

Introduction and Exterior

The Impreza is the first Subaru to utilise the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP). Up and coming cars in the Subaru line-up will be utilising the same platform. This is good for Subaru, as it means that developmental cost per car is significantly lower, allowing the small auto manufacturer to optimise their developmental dollar.

The new 2017 Subaru Impreza joins a fray of compact family sedan and hatch offerings, aiming to attract the increasingly spoilt for choice buyer. As expected, the Impreza brings to the table its signature boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drivetrain.

But in a market which is flooded by the likes of the new Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and the ever-so-popular Toyota Corolla Altis, will all that all-wheel drive hype help make the car stand out from the crowd?

The Impreza is the first Subaru to utilise the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP). Up and coming cars in the Subaru line-up will be utilising the same platform. This is good for Subaru, as it means that developmental cost per car is significantly lower, allowing the small auto manufacturer to optimise their developmental dollar.

Exterior
Our test car was the 4 door 1.6 litre sedan. From most angles, the car does look pleasing to the eye. Gone from the new car, is the fat framed wheel arches that came with the previous car. There has been plenty of thought put into the styling. Stepping away from body coloured door grab handles, chromed ones makes the Impreza look more upmarket.

The front grille maintains a similar hexagonal design as with the previous car, but this time, styling is kept neat, with it not protruding out, like a long lower lip. Bonnet lines flow upward and outward from the headlamps and front grille, leaving a near-flat area in the middle (which creates space for the WRX air scoop?). New headlamp treatment sees new ‘C’ shaped daytime running lights within the cluster.

Other changes also include new rear tail lamp treatment, with part of the cluster this time spilling on to the boot lid.

The at 4,625mm, the new Impreza is just 40mm longer than the previous car, with about half of this gain in length going into the 2,670mm wheelbase.
