Simply Game Changing

Introduction and Exterior

The 5 Series is BMW’s second-best selling car, and the previous one was launched back in 2011, which was quite a long while back, making the new 7th generation model a very important car for BMW, which goes up toe-to-toe with its traditional Mercedes-Benz rival, and the new entrant from Sweden

The Mercedes-Benz E class, which was launched in 2016, caught the attention of the motoring press, offering a refined car that was extremely quiet within the cabin and equipped with semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The guys at Stuttgart had upped the game too by launching different models to fill different market segments.

To add to the fray of executive classed cars in the market, Swedish automaker, Volvo also introduced their flagship S90 sedan in the same year, with a more ‘Swedish’ approach to building an executive sedan, featuring the creature spoils of an open pore wooden dash , while powered by a twin-boosted engine, driving all wheels, but still kept the drive comfortable and laid back.

The 5 Series is BMW’s second-best selling car, and the previous one was launched back in 2011, which was quite a long while back, making the new 7th generation model a very important car for BMW, which goes up toe-to-toe with its traditional Mercedes-Benz rival, and the new entrant from Sweden.

Exterior
We got into (and out of) the BMW 540i (G30 to those who feel the need to car geek a little), and the way the mighty fiver dishes out on its performance, tech and styling, was just simply stunning.

There is a little hint of 7 Series in the new car. A long bonnet with some serious gap between the front wheel and the front door, an air curtain cover sits behind the front wheel arch, quite similar to the 7’s ice hockey stick ones.

20” ‘Individual’ rims fill up large wheel arches, and ‘glued’ on to them are 245/35 R20 shoes. Going with BMW’s new design language, BMW’s signature Hofmeister kink has been ‘doubled’, at the C pillar, by the forming of the sheet metal at the door surrounds.

The new car is marginally larger than the older F10 model, while generally lighter too, thanks to the aluminium body panelling. We were also hoping that the “Carbon Core” technology found in the 7 Series would trickle its way into this new car, but we figured that it would have brought the price up tremendously.

Essentially though, while Mercedes had embarked on a styling exercise which made their three main sedans near identical at first glance, BMW has kept a fine balance of making sure that their 3, 5 and 7 cars could be easily distinguished, while maintaining their design language.
