Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 Review
Nippy and zippy

Hyperactive and light on their feet, Raymond Lai likens new generation Suzuki Swift Sport to be a pesky puppy.

Introduction, styling

I am no dog lover but I have to admit that little puppies are rather cute, especially those that stay relatively quiet and still as they sit on their owner’s lap. Well, not all puppies are like that though. There are some that are very hyper – they wag their tails continuously, wriggle round everyone’s legs and run round the room like a scalded cat down a drainpipe.

The description of the hyperactive puppy seems to suit cars like the Suzuki Swift Sport. The Swift Sport is small and rather cute, just like a puppy and judging by the outgoing last generation model, is fun to ‘play’ with.

Before the launch of the last generation Swift Sport in 2006, it seemed to be an eternity since a hot Swift was offered in the Suzuki range. Back in the 1990s, the Swift GTi was the darling among boy racer types. Diehard fans of the Swift GTi had to turn elsewhere to look for their cheap thrills when it was finally discontinued in the latter half of the 90s.

With the introduction of the new Swift last year, it was a matter of time before Suzuki launched a new generation Swift Sport to replace the 2006 model.  The long awaited new car is finally here and we’ve taken one out for s spin.

The new Sport is distinguished from the current generation regular Swift by several go faster bits that are largely similar to those on its predecessor. At the front, the new Sport is adorned by a deep bumper with large air intakes to feed cold air to the highly tuned engine; honeycomb inserts for the grille as well as darkened headlamp surrounds. The side features deeper side skirts and the rear has the obligatory roof spoiler and a bumper with a metallic grey-coloured diffuser and a chrome exhaust tip on either sides. The exterior’s racy add ons are rounded off by 16-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard. All in all, just like the model it replaces, the Swift Sport doesn’t look boy racer-brash or wild. The added aggression is certainly subtle and purposeful. We would say it’s rather tasteful as well. Just like the standard Swift models though, the new Sport looks so much like its predecessor that Average Joe is unlikely to mark it out from the old model – it’ll take an eagle eyed car nut or a Swift fan to immediately distinguish the new car from the model it replaces.
