The term Q car refers to subtle looking saloons and estates with high performance engines underneath that can run rings around sports cars. We love Q cars for their ability to surprise the unknowing when booting it at a traffic light junction. Our favourite Q cars include models like the Subaru Legacy RS, Volvo S40 T4, Mitsubishi Galant VR4 and the Skoda Octavia RS among others.
Now there’s a new Q car to add to the above list – the Ford Mondeo Ecoboost 240 test driven here. As its name suggests, this Mondeo packs 240bhp from its 2-litre Ecoboost motor, making it one of the most powerful family saloon models out there.
The Mondeo range was only facelifted last year. Among the changes made during the facelift include a refreshed exterior as well as a new powertrain unit that consist of a 2-litre Ecoboost turbocharged motor making 203bhp and a six-speed PowerShift dual clutch gearbox, which replaced the naturally aspirated 2.3-litre unit and automatic gearbox in pre-updated models. For 2012, Ford has stopped offering last year’s 203bhp model with the Ecoboost 240, which is basically similar on the outside to last year’s model but with the same 2-litre Ecoboost tuned for a far more impressive 240bhp.
The third generation Mondeo’s styling was a breath of fresh air when it first made its debut in 2006. Based on the striking Iosis concept car, the Mondeo was one of the first Fords to embody the brand’s current Kinetic Design styling philosophy. The 4844mm long Mondeo might be one of the longest cars among its competitors but Ford’s designers have done well to make it appear athletic rather than bulky. The updated model can easily be recognized from the old car by its new radiator grille while the front bumper features a bolder and lower trapezoidal opening and LED daytime running lights for an even classier look. The contours on the bonnet have been further enhanced while the new boot lid and tail lamps with LED technology complete the exterior tweaks on the updated car. The latest 240bhp model here is differentiated from last year’s 203bhp model only via its ‘Ecoboost 240’ badge on the right hand side of the boot lid. The ‘240’ on the badge is so tiny and discreet that you’d need a magnifying glass or a pair of reading glasses to spot it.
The 240bhp Mondeo offers no hint at all of its 240bhp poke under the bonnet or its performance potential – it looks like any run-of-the-mill Mondeo or family saloon for that matter, with even the 17-inch wheels not convincingly filling up its wheel arches.
