What does the Bigfoot, a spider, a Jerry can, a seven-slot grille and an original Willy’s have in common? The new Jeep Renegade SUV successfully fills the compact car gap in their range, which has been left wide open for a while. Where the basic Old Wrangler left off, the new Renegade (which takes its name off the older Jeep CJ trim nameplate) presents a fresh new take to the Jeep brand.

While based very heavily on the Fiat 500X, it is hard to see any resemblance to its Italian cousin. The Renegade draws plenty of visual inspiration from the original Willy’s model which was issued to troops during the Second World War.

There is that seven-slot grille which has become part of Jeep’s identity, and flanking this, round headlamp units, paying homage to the original, all kept within a large coloured plastic surround. Black bumpers and side skirts on the chunkily-styled body add to the rugged impression the Renegade exudes.

Compact dimensions carried over from its the Fiat underpinnings has given the Renegade SUV a slightly squashed side silhouette, which comes across as playfully-cute.

The bonnet carries on it a “Power Hump”, giving the impression of a bigger, more powerful traditionally-mounted longitudinal engine. In actual fact, it is a 1.4 litre, squeezed on by a turbocharger.

Rear tail lamps draw references from Jerry cans used in the military, but there is nothing Jerry about this car. Ever since Chrysler had split from Daimler, with Fiat taking controlling interest in the car company, there had been a steady stream of positive developmental changes in their product lines. With a trickle of small engines and matching transmissions, plus compact platforms which the Italian manufacturer specialises in, the Renegade is in-fact built alongside its Fiat cousin, the 500X in the FCA Melfi Plant in Italy.
