Alfa Romeo revives an old evocative name for its new Golf-sized five-door hatchback. Raymond Lai drives the replacement for the 147, the new Giulietta.

When it comes to cars, you would associate meticulous engineering with the German brands. It’s quirkiness when it comes to French automobiles, robustness and reliability for Japanese cars and value-for-money for Korean. For style though, the Italians are indisputable.

Italy makes the most stylish and beautiful cars in the world, there’s no doubt about that. Scrutinize the lines and curves on a Ferrari or an Alfa Romeo and somehow you’ll feel that there’s a lot of passion and emotion involved in their design process. Italian cars are an art form or you can even call them automotive sculptures. When have anyone said that any Italian car was ungainly looking (other than the Fiat Multipla of course)? Past Italian style icons like the original Alfa Romeo Spider and GT Junior, Lancia Stratos, Fiat 124 Spider, countless Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis  are till revered and inspiration to the best of car designers these days.

The formidable Italians have also proved that they have not lost their stylistic passion in recent times – the Fiat 500, Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and Maserati Gran Turismo are just some of the recent models that will join the ever growing list of Italian design classics.

Alfa Romeo’s latest offering, the Giulietta is another stylish automotive sculpture from Italy. The Giulietta is the long awaited replacement for the 147 and is Alfa Romeo’s take on the hugely popular Volkswagen Golf. The Giulietta is one of Alfa Romeo’s most evocative names that is first used in the 1950s and have since been revived several times as a model nameplate in the car company’s history. While early Giuliettas featured saloon, coupe and spider body styles, the modern day, Golf challenging Giulietta is quite obviously a five-door family hatchback.

From nose to tail, the Giulietta certainly cuts a fine style among contemporary five-door family hatchback models like the Golf and Ford Focus. Up front, the Giulietta’s nose treatment is inspired by the gorgeously beautiful 8C Competezione, which means Alfa’s distinctive shield-shaped grille flanked by large circular headlamps. Unlike the MiTo’s slightly ‘cocked eye’ look though, the Giulietta’s front end looks more resolved thanks to the more proportionately sized headlamps. Following the design features of recent four- and five-door Alfa models, the Giulietta’s rear door handles are superbly concealed on the C-pillars for a cleaner look along the flanks. The rear features slim tail lamps that the give the Giulietta a more dynamic look compared to the MiTo when viewed from the rear. Overall, the Giulietta’s styling looks more resolved than its slightly awkward looking MiTo baby brother’s.
