Torque-ing it out

The Range Rover Sport gets minor updates and a new, more powerful diesel lump. Raymond Lai checks it out.

Introduction, styling

Land Rover and its Range Rover luxury sub-brand are well known to produce off-roaders that will take you almost anywhere that you can imagine. Those of a certain vintage will remember that the Land Rover Defender was also once the mainstay of the army’s vehicle fleet. Those who have visited the Cameron Highlands will also know that Landies are the workhorses of choice for the tea plantations and farms in the area thanks to their ability to tackle almost any form of terrain.

So if you ever find yourself stranded in some muddy ditch or thick rainforest, you’re more likely to get out of such unfavourable terrain or environment in a Land Rover or Range Rover rather than any other form of four-wheeled vehicle.

Unless you are an Anglophile or the kind that go off roading every weekend though, Range Rovers hardly top the list for the typical Singaporean luxury SUV buyer. But with the introduction of a wider range of models and variants and aggressive pricing by current Jaguar Land Rover dealer Wearnes Automotive though, the brand is fast gaining in popularity among buyers of high-end luxury SUVs.

While the Evoque makes for a good entry-level model for Range Rover that is more than capable to tackle competition like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 among others, it is the upper end models like the Sport and the Vogue that wholly embodies Range Rover traditions and character while having an unenviable task on its hand to tempt luxury SUV buyers away from the likes of the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne among others.

Range Rover has recently tweaked the Sport range, with the diesel powered SDV6 model tested here getting a more powerful oil burning motor, more gears in its gearbox as well as other under-the-skin modifications and new features.

Based on the 2004 Range Stormer concept, the Range Rover Sport was first introduced way back in 2005. Compared to the Range Rover Vogue, the Discovery based Rangie Sport has more compact exterior dimensions overall – it is a significant 88mm lower, 58mm narrower, 189mm shorter and has a 135mm shorter wheelbase. Despite its more compact size, the Sport actually manages to retain the Vogue’s stately demeanour and road presence. This could be due to styling features like the upright nose with its slightly bling headlamps and horizontal louvres for the radiator grille. The Sport’s lowered roofline and more rakish front windscreen does make it look more athletic and adds an aura of sportiness and dynamism that the more formal looking Vogue doesn’t have. Be it a Sport or a Vogue, a tailgating Rangie will fill up the image on your rear view mirror so convincingly and with menace that you’re more likely give way to it than with other cars.

The Sport’s looks have stayed relatively the same over the years despite having been updated several times previously. In its latest 2012 update, the Rangie Sport can be marked out by its new tailgate graphics, darkened headlamp and grille surrounds as well as subtle colour changes to the grille and fender vents.
