MINI Cooper Countryman Review
Where Size Matters

The new car boasts a longer wheelbase, with almost 80mm added, and overall the car is 200mm longer than the old car

The new Mini Cooper Countryman is MINI’s biggest one yet. Based on the same architecture as the BMW X1, the new Countryman has many expectations to meet, but can it?

The previous car looked pretty fierce, but did lack in interior build quality. Space was another issue.

The new car boasts a longer wheelbase, with almost 80mm added, and overall the car is 200mm longer than the old car. We do hear from the people at MINI, that this will be the largest that a MINI should be (least for now).

Overall the new Maxi-sized Countryman’s styling is milder than the previous car. This one carries a more curious looking face, with a gaping mouth of a grille. Surrounding the headlamps are daytime running lights, which are again surrounded by a chrome ring.

Side profile styling carries a few discreet bulges, pushing out the front and rear wheel arches, which are in-turn framed by very large plastic wheel guards.

Unlike the Clubman, which was launched last year, which has a rather flowy shoulder line and window sill (rather sausage-y looking), the Countryman’s window sill lies near-perfectly straight, making the car bolder looking.

That dip in the roofline, after the C pillar ties the Countryman with its predecessor styling-wise, and like the previous car, is visually supported by a smaller rear window.

Gone is that large toy-like ‘MINI’ badge at the rear of the car, and instead MINI has chosen to take reference from the original car, with the license plate slot dead in the centre of the boot lid, keeping the car tied in with the MINI identity.
