Electric City

Living with an electric car may require some minor adjustments to daily routines.

Simple issues like the limited availability of charging points, could almost dictate which supermarket, where would dinner be, or even which cinema do we catch our next movie at.

Since 2011, we have seen an increase of charging points dotting the island, from locations like shopping malls and even on occasion certain office complexes. The then effort was for Singapore to be a test bed for the viability of the electric car. To date, apart from a few (unofficial) Tesla cars dotting our roads, the rest of the electric car population carries on them “RD” plating for research.

The revamped BMW i3 now delivers almost twice the range, making it a viable car, not only to do the weekly supermarket run, but also one which you could live with. At least that is what we hope for.

The Car
Beginning life in 2014, the quirky hatchback with rearward opening suicide doors seats four in decent comfort, and delivers some of the good creature spoils, like climate control, wooden dash panels made from either dark oak or eucalyptus wood, and a Harman Kardon sound system. There is a certain charm this car has, with its extra-large 19” rims and short overhangs.

Pop open the doors, and be greeted right-away by the sight of the strong and lightweight carbon-fibre structuring of the car, carbon-fibre reinforced plastic body panels.

The minimalist dash is also a thing to get used to, and is reminiscent of what you may have encountered from cars in sci-fi movies just fifteen to twenty years ago. Very importantly what is offered to the driver on the digitised instrument display, are bits of information like your speed, if the car is charging or drawing power, and the most important of them all, the remaining range that is available.

Pop open the snazzy glass bootlid and there is a flat loading area providing a practical 260 litres of cargo space, or two stacked cabin bags and one duffel. Drop the rear seats and you get yourself 1,100 litres.
