Sport-ing decision

Looking for a stylish small car with a dose of fun? The Swift Sport or the Veloster might fit the bill.

Introduction, styling

Many ‘newbies’ to first time car-buying associate basic cars like the Kia Forte, the ubiquitous Corolla Altis, Honda Jazz to be the last words in efficient point A to B transportation. However, not everybody is content with just an average ride and aspire to have something that is actually invigorating or entertaining to drive. For those who want a little more fun than the average three-box econo-sedan or compact hatchback in their rides and are on a relatively tight budget thankfully have cars like the pair you see here – the Hyundai Veloster and the Suzuki Swift Sport. Let’s find out which of these two is the more ‘fun’ in its execution.

Judging by their looks, the Veloster is by far, the more adventurous and hence, the more fun in its character when compared to the diminutive Suzuki. First appearing as a concept at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, the Veloster is touted by Hyundai as a 1+2 door coupe as it has one door on the driver’s side just like a coupe but on the passenger side, the Veloster actually has two doors, which makes it a five-door hatchback on one side, just like the Swift Sport here, but not in the conventional sense.

The Swift Sport on the other hand, is more akin to a regular five-door hatchback in its body style, which is to be expected since it is based on the regular Swift supermini. Despite its more conventional styling, the Swift Sport displays a fair amount of sportiness in its stance. The Suzuki’s sporty honeycomb grille is flanked by darkened headlamps and additional air intakes on the lower bumper, fog lamps with wing like elements sit on the lower grille, just like on its predecessor. The side features deeper side skirts to differentiate it from lesser Swifts and there’s the obligatory roof spoiler on the hatch and a deep rear bumper with a metallic grey diffuser. Two fat, chrome exhaust pipes stick out prominently out of the bumper, either side of the diffuser. 16-inch multi-spoke alloys complete the exterior enhancements on the top spec Swift.

The Swift looks sporty enough on its own but next to the funky looking Hyundai, it just doesn’t have the verve and unique character of the Veloster’s styling. The Hyundai’s myriad of notable styling details and bright, happy colours make the Swift Sport look almost plain in comparison – there are hidden rear door handles, creases on the front and rear bumpers, non-functional bonnet vents that are too boy racer for our liking, blistered wheel arches, 18-inch alloy wheels with body coloured inserts on the spokes, black A-pillars for a more striking glass house appearance, centrally mounted rectangular exhaust tips as well as the two-piece glass tailgate that echoes that on the Honda CR-Z. The Veloster is undoubtedly a bold and inspired design next to the more regular looking Swift Sport here.
