BMW 6 Series 640i xDrive Gran Turismo M Sport Review
The Grandest Jack of All Trades

the Gran Turismo does challenge convention

Where do we go with this one? BMW has just launched something of an oddball. It really is part coupe, part sedan, part hatch, part estate, and there is a bit of a lean to performance with this one. While there at first glance, the new car looks just like its 5 Series GT predecessor, but is it any better?

Oneshift’s Clifford Chow gets to the bottom of this confusion, to find the sense and sensibility in Beemer’s new GT.

Styling

You would not be wrong to say that it does look a little coupe-ish, and some might even say it looks quite like a crossover, the Gran Turismo does challenge convention. Officially styled as a Grand Tourer (hence the name), The GT does have a similar footprint versus, say a Porsche Panamera, at 5,091mm, as compared to 5,049mm respectively in length, and a width of 1,902mm vs the Porsche’s marginally wider 1,937mm girth.

A large kidney grille flanks almost equally large headlamps which feature LED daytime running lights, and a large air-sucking lower grille.

From the side, get a sense of its coupe-like styling, from the long bonnet, with the steeply raked wind shied and set-back positioning of the passenger cabin. The wheelbase at 3,070mm (same as its predecessor) is actually closer to that of the longer wheelbase “Executive” version of the Porsche Panamera’s 3,100mm, allowing for plenty of play with form on its side profile; something which does not disappoint. Right below the rear quarter glass, which features a subtle version of their signature Hofmeister Kink, the 640i displays a more pronounced shoulder line and a bulging rear fender.

While all of this does hint a little of its 5 Series sibling, the rear tail lamps gets some ‘squish’ in its styling, and at the top of the boot lid, the 640i does get an electrically-actuated Polycarbonate GT wing.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
