Lexus LC 500 L1 Review
The Soulful Howl of Excellence

Just like the LFA, the LC 500 breaks away from traditionally predictable design…

Just when the hype of their LFA supercar had died down, Lexus delivers a front-engined, rear drive grand tourer…

Just like the LFA, the LC 500 breaks away from traditionally predictable design… With Lexus producing one of the most proportionately balanced and beautiful cars we have seen this year.

The new platform the LC 500 sits on is part of their global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA-L), which forms the blueprint for their front-engine, rear drive Lexus cars.

Perhaps with the GS and IS models, the frontal styling was either a hit or miss for some, with the headlamp design coming across as a little too radical for taste. But then, we have a look at the LC 500, and somehow, that very same design language simply falls into place.

The L-shaped daytime running lights, the pinched grille with chrome surround, and tri-LED headlamps, on each side which drop downward to a large air intake. In front, the LC gets 245/40RF21 and 275/35RF21 Bridgestones.

In keeping things neat, the door handles are flush with the door panel, and there are large scoops just behind the doors. Tail lamp treatment apes those in the front, with down-flowing lenses, and the same “origami” type styling on the boot lid. On the top of the boot, a collapsible wing sits, which adds to the downforce of the coupe at speed.

Additional weight-saving and CG lowering goodies like Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics form the roof and scruff plate. Dig deep, and you will find more carbon fibre, high-strength steel and aluminium, all in to create a near-perfect 52:48 weight distribution.

There is plenty of technology and thought put into the car, which we know Lexus is fully capable of, but what we did not expect of them, was that the car actually felt like it had a soul. Something we feel that the clinical LFA lacks in.
