BMW 2 Series 225xe Active Tourer Review
The Extra Mile

Wait, that sounds like an i8 drivetrain in reverse.

BMW daringly introduces a comprehensive range of Plugin Hybrids (PHEVs), to meet the needs of a changing environmental landscape. Their efforts are a step into the direction of full electrification of their future range of cars. I do however believe that the petrol engine has many good years ahead of it.

While there are already efforts in-place to even retrieve under-performing batteries from PHEVs and EVs of age going on in Europe for the existing BMW iPerformance range; which would in-turn be used as energy storage of clean energies, and in-turn again utilised to power cities, Singapore would have a long way to go for any of these extended efforts to kick into action.

Singapore has seen the likes of the i3 and i8 ply our roads, and it is only recent that we have seen a greater push in the direction of electrification, with BMW leading the charge (no pun intended), that we see a slow-but-steadily-growing number of PHEVs ply our streets.

The remnants of any last efforts years back can be seen in the form of “RD” plated cars, mostly BYD taxis, and the aging network of Type 1 charging stations littered across the island.

So what really is the draw of the electric car? Perhaps a good conversational piece for the rich? A car which does not pollute (well, we are only as clean as our power stations are)?

And how about the mining going on wherever else there may be, just to harvest the raw materials we need to produce batteries for these cars? Valuable questions we can ask, with Singapore in a unique position, as a potential leader within the region, while we struggle with infrastructure (or the lack of) and the world’s most expensive cars. Certainly a quagmire which we placed ourselves in… *giggity*

BMW had fielded their 2 Series Active Tourer as one of the cars to be made available within their iPerformance range. The 225Xe provides drive to the front wheels with all the assurance of a petrol-engined car, and added range, delivered from electric motors driving the rear wheels. Wait, that sounds like an i8 drivetrain in reverse.

There are just a few noticeable differences between the vanilla car and the iPerformance unit. Some notable blue trim, especially accenting its trademark kidney grille, an additional ‘tank lid’ on the front-left fender which houses the Type 2 charging port, and some fancy e-Drive tagging on the C pillars.
