You know what? The Passat has been in production for nearly 34 years. Here’s another fact: is about 10 years since we have seen a new model. Anyway, Passat version 6.0 was due to be released in UK on the 24th June 2005 – sans bugs.
Where the old Passat was more of the Peugeot 406 and Renault Laguna party competitor, this new model really pushes everything into the next level, and into the realm of small, executive cum family cars just like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Volvo S60.
Interior
First on the block to premier is Volkswagen’s interesting new features to the new "press and drive" keyless starting system. The remote control door-locking fob is inserted into the dashboard.
This activates the accessories function so things like the air conditioner fan, radio and fuel pump turns on. You simply push the thing in further to start the 2 litre FSI with your foot on the brake.
The conventional handbrake has been electrified, or rather, it is operated by a button to the extreme right of the steering column. It clamps down on (surprise) all four wheels. Now, this is for the careless minded – if you forget to disengage it by another press of the button and happen to drive off, the computer does the dirty work for you.
Smart move. The space freed up is filled instead with a sizeable armrest big enough to house my Digital SLR Camera, wallet and other odds and ends, and a concealed, air-conditioned storage compartment that abounds underneath.
I was astonished by the size of the Passat’s boot. On paper, it tells of the 485 cubic litres but one doesn’t fathom the enormity of this vault until you see it. Next time, I’m taking my kitchen sink on holiday, along with the cabinets, and still have space for golf.
As if that wasn’t enough, the rear seats fold down in 60/40 style to further increase load carrying capacity, and provide some form of “reclinability”. They can be locked by key to keep the boot secure as well.
The ergonomically designed seats are height adjustable for driver and co-driver. The increase to the range of both length and height settings mark the increased wheelbase of this car over the previous generation Passat.
You adjust seat inclination and height simultaneously, as well as save them to memory along with your side mirror settings. A new rail mechanism allows more subtle adjustments of the front seating length. The driver’s seat goes six-ways, complete with electrically adjustable lumbar support.
Front and rear legroom is exceptional. The Passat could be used by a chauffeuring company with ease. From the B pillar backwards, the glass is tinted by a fair bit in accordance to local regulations for an additional degree of privacy.
