Hyundai Kona 1.6 GLS Turbo Review
Kona the Suburban

13 Apr 2018

but in my lens, the Kona really is as Hawaiian as a Hawaiian pizza (which according to popular belief, was really invented in Canada by a Greek)

Hyundai’s new compact crossover, the Kona brings fun back onto motoring. With its funky stacked headlamp design, guards over the wheels and the rest of the body for a more rugged look, the Kona certainly turns heads! And we can confirm that with curious looks and smiles from pedestrians while at the lights. This is not the first time the Korean manufacturer produced something this funky from their factories. Their Veloster hatch featured design cues from another planet, and an unequal number of doors on both sides.

The Kona moniker is derived from a large district in the Western side of the island of Hawaii, but in my lens, the Kona really is as Hawaiian as a Hawaiian pizza (which according to popular belief, was really invented in Canada by a Greek).

Slightly smaller in-size than its Tucson  sibling, and lower in height, the Kona’s unconventional styling is aimed at the younger SUV/Crossover buyer. Together with the likes of the equally unconventional Toyota C-HR, and the SEAT Arona, it is not surprising that Hyundai’s entry targets the very same market as they do.

A closer look at the pinched front grille reveals similar design cues shared by newer Hyundai SUVs, and on the whole, with its slit-style lamps, does present a face which resembles something along of Iron Man’s mask.

From the side, there are plastic wheel guards, which are integrated with the head and tail lights, to emphasise the rugged intent this car has been built for… or is it rugged in the first place?

At the rear too, there is plenty of activity, with more complex pressed metal, slim lamp covers and bits of faux scruff plates. That said, the car is genuinely pretty.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
