There are also little touches of the hand of Ferrari in the car

Our test car was the higher-powered 2.0 Veloce model, in black, and as cool as a raven in the night… Compared to the 159 it replaces, the Giulia boasts better proportions, is visually louder, and almost-vulgar but in a very good way!

Like late model Alfas, the Giulia carries on with the same super large “V” shaped styled front grille, which would inevitably offset the front licence plate. The honeycombed vents underline the car’s sporting intentions, while sleek-elongated headlamps and a sculpted bonnet create an aggressively scrawled face.

The visually aggressive story also finds its way to the rear of the car, with a sharply-formed boot lid, leaving an impression of a wing, and “one on each side” styled tail pipes.

Since it is a rear-wheel drive there is also an extra bit of “car” between the front fender and front door to accommodate the North-south mounted engine. Visually, this little detail always does wonders to a car, styling-wise, by adding to it a stretched-out sense of “premium-ness”. And this, my friends is something we have not seen in the brand in quite a while… a premium feel communicated throughout to the owner.

Our test car featured 19” Quadrifoglio (Four-Leaf Clover) lightweight aluminium wheels, which do a fine job of showing off the car’s rotors and “Alfa Romeo” branded calipers.

Red sculpted leather seats matches well with the red on the dash and door cards. Front seats are supportive, though they could work with a better tilt function, and while the rear seats are sculpted quite well, the legroom is comparable to an Audi A3, or even less.

The Giulia also features a decent infotainment unit, though we feel that the user interface could be designed a little better. That said, it is neat, and easy enough to navigate.

The air-conditioning unit too, does a wonderful job, even in our tropical climate. The unit is built for them by specialist Japanese manufacturer, Sanden.

Overall quality of plastics has also seen an improvement. I could recall just two generations back, in the 156, many mid and long term owners suffered with sticky sun damaged plastics, which would in time attract dust particles and even the odd ball of tissue paper to them. In this car, I honestly have a sense that everything in here will physically last a very good number of years.

There are also little touches of the hand of Ferrari in the car, from the “Start” button sited on the steering wheel, to the fixed large milled aluminium gear shift pedals. I did not however take so well to the fabric stitched to the steering wheel, as with time, this would get gritty and gunky form use.

Cargo room, even with the transmission mounted at the rear is actually very decent, at 480 litres.
