The 1.4 litre A4 did well as an entry-level baby exec sedan, sitting in the same playpen as the entry Mercedes-Benz C180 and BMW’s 318i, it became a popular option for those who wanted a foot in the door of the executive car club.

Now the Germans have replaced that engine with a more efficient unit, a 2 litre featuring what they termed ‘B’ Cycle, which is able to deliver the efficiency of a smaller engine under normal driving loads, and is also able to indulge you in a little bit of heavy-footing.

So with a more efficient burn, thanks to its high compression, some clever shortening of the engine’s compression, and extending its expansion phase, together with the help of force-feeding from a turbocharger and Audi’s valvelift system (AVS), the new 2 litre does a very good 19.2km/l combined cycle, which is the same as the 1.4 litre it replaces.

But with the same economy, the 2.0 pumps out 190bhp, 40 more than the 1.4 litre, and torque is rated at 320Nm, an extra 70Nm, and as a plus, it is also able to put down this torque just very slightly lower down the rev-counter at 1,450rpm, instead of 1,500rpm.... the little things that make a better drive.

The new engine is livelier, and while the 1.4 did delivered sufficiently well on performance, with a century sprint time of 8.5 seconds, the 2.0 pips this by 1.2 seconds. The A4 still uses their now familiar 7-speed dual clutch transmission for seamless power delivery, good for keeping the boost up and the car going.

While perhaps there are those in the market who believe that a car in this segment has to be rear driven, and we would not deny that rear drive cars do have their merits, especially on how they feel around the bends, and while the front driven A4 may not deliver that little bit of perceived driver magic, most drivers of these entry models would likely not be the ones who drive foot-on-floor.

The B-Segment car does ride well, with 205/60 tyres on 16” lightweight aluminium rims, another plus for owners, since there is not only more ride comfort with more rubber between the road and rim, but tyre changes too will cost less.

The steering does come across as rather light, though it does weigh down with the switch of drive mode to “Dynamic”. Turn-in is accurate as expected, and engine noise barely intrudes into the cabin.
