Superb Trouper Feeling Like a Number One

When the first generation of the modern Skoda Superb was introduced, most could tell that it was generally an elongated Volkswagen Passat. It did make sense back then for the Czech brand to field a car which shared some of its body panels with its German cousin, albeit a longer wheelbase with longer rear doors. You see, in the larger scale of things, Volkswagen was fielding a longer wheelbase version of the Passat in China, where cars with simply more rear legroom were immensely popular.

The Superb then was built like a tank, with a little more room at the rear, offering a little more car for a little less coin, but sans the VW branding. But the cars were seen very differently back then, since it was really just a little over a decade before that the Velvet Revolution turned the country’s planned economy into a capitalist-leaning one, and “Czechoslovakia” was again two countries. One back then could be easily forgiven to still see the cars as another affordable alternative to a Russian brand, where quality and frills were never high up on their design brief. But in actual fact, they were far from right.

Their Volkswagen parent had already seeded their funding into the brand quite early in the game, and the results can truly be seen in today’s Superb.

The current car’s design language clearly defines the brand, with more edgy styling, featuring angular lines and lesser curves. While the Superb now has frontal overhangs, it is by no means a short car. At 4,861mm in length, the Superb is almost the length of a Mercedes-Benz E Class. From the side, you can easily see where Skoda had allocated all that space. Its rear doors are massive… meaning easier entry and exit, and like its predecessor, the added wheelbase is intended to provide more leg and knee room for rear occupants. The large boot also means that the car does have quite a bit of a rear overhang, and in a Singaporean environment where we mostly reverse park, the Superb backs in mostly without the nose of the car sticking out of the lot, since there is usually a bit of space behind the kerb to back into.

Up in front, angular cleanly styled bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights flank a wide grille, forming the unmistakable face of the car. At the rear, the new signature C-shaped lights carry on them crystalline elements, which add to the brilliance of the design.

The range-topping car also receives a neat set of 19” alloys, while the mid ‘Ambition Plus’ and entry ‘Ambition’ models are equipped with 18” and 17” rims respectively.
