Flattery at its best maybe?
Once upon a time, there was a little Korean automobile manufacturer, which relied on foreign expertise to build cars in a simple factory which only had a dirt floor. The cars they manufactured were rather crude, with ill-fitting trim, but yet robust. From a price point of view, the brand became immensely popular with the budget-conscious.
A few good decades later, Hyundai is an automotive giant to be noticed, with showrooms filled to the brim with a range of cars rivalling not just their Japanese counterparts, but some of the models are even biting at the heels of the Continental brands.
With its sights aimed at the European market, the Czech-built Hyundai i30 is a car which in essence carries so many technical similarities with the iconic Volkswagen Golf. From its 1.4 litre turbocharged engine, quick shifting dual clutch seven-speed transmission (produced by themselves) and propped by a MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension setup…. What are the odds?
Flattery at its best maybe?
But Hyundai had taken this a step further, by offering a station wagon version of the same car, meaning that we also have a car which goes up against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf Variant and the Opel Astra Sports Tourer.
While the Golf comes across as a car with a finely worked-out balance between ‘form’ and ‘function’, the i30 on the other hand plays up the ‘function’ bit a little more than ‘form’… but all of this for less coin.
The wagon version of the i30 shares the same styling as its hatch sibling in the front. A little round in the nose, with a cascading grille, and LED daytime running lights under the headlamp assembly forms the face of the car, and reflects the current design language of the brand. Once past the front doors, things start to change, with a raised roofline, and a side window profile which sweeps downward towards the “D” pillar.
At the rear, the wagon carries with it quite similar styling to the hatch, though the tail lamp design is slightly different.
